ABOUT THIS EVENT

In his essay, “Playing Mothers,” Adam Phillips describes two temptations for the psychotherapist. On one hand, the therapist is tempted to be a caricature, to “play mother” by attempting to contain all of the patient’s negative affect and transform it—assuming absolute knowledge of, and responsibility for, the patient. On the other hand, the therapist is tempted to be “the willing victim of an open transference” and to retreat into a withdrawn, quasi-exploratory stance—assuming absolute skepticism about the patient and leaving them alone in their suffering. The temptation is to be a soothing guru or a blank page, both positions of distance. This case presentation explores these dual temptations for the therapist in the treatment of a hypervigilant narcissistic patient who is experienced as both fragile and provocative, tempting the therapist to either soothe or withdraw. This case will primarily focus on the analytic field including the fantasies the patient has about the therapist (and vice versa), the role of the patient’s psychosexuality in the transference, and the 'working through' of enactments related to love, hate, and knowledge. Issues of sexuality, gender, and spirituality will be of particular concern.
